      One of the major contributions of this field is the article entitled “Curcuma longa L. Rhizome Essential Oil: From Extraction to Potential Application”. The paper is a detailed survey of turmeric rhizome essential oils and how yield, composition, and applications in downstream processing are influenced by different extraction methods. Classic techniques like steam distillation and solvent extraction were compared to modern ones, including supercritical fluid extraction and microwave-assisted extraction. The authors note that newer techniques yield higher yields and also preserve such sensitive bioactive compounds as turmerones with the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the oil.

      This study matters in the sense that it creates a direct link between extraction technology and oil quality, beyond brute yield to functional and therapeutic value. Interestingly, the review details increasing industrial interest in turmeric oil for pharmaceuticals, food preservation, and cosmetics hence situating essential oil science within an international bioeconomy context. But one weakness of the research is its emphasis on expensive laboratory or industrial methods, which, although successful, are often beyond the resources of small-scale processors in a resource-poor setting.

      For this project, this paper presents opportunity as well as challenge. It presents the high value of turmeric essential oil and the need to preserve the bioactive compounds of the oil, which justifies extraction. At the same time, it identifies an imbalance: most reported methods rely on expensive infrastructures and controlled laboratory conditions. This suggests that SMEs in Trinidad would require an affordable, mechanical solutions. The initiative is positioned to reduce the gap noted in the MDPI evaluation by emphasizing low-cost mechanical extraction rather than sophisticated chemical or supercritical methods, maximizing the use value of essential oil production for small stakeholders.
